Marco Island Rated as One of the Best Places to RetireMarco Island, Sarasota, and Naples have come in as some of the top places in the country for retirees. It's no secret that Marco Island Florida offers luxurious beachfront accommodations, residences, condominium communities, and buildings as well as single-family homes and gated golf communities. But in general, Florida eight dominates this year's ranking of the Best Places to Retire based on the latest research by US News & World Report.

The top five places in the country include Sarasota, Naples – Marco Island, Daytona Beach, Melbourne, and the Fort Myers, Cape Coral area. Florida has always been on the docket for retirees. Our warm weather, beach atmosphere, year-round outdoor activities, and a variety of resorts have all led Florida to be one of the key places for retirees. These areas offer residents a high sense of well-being and high marks for desirability. Sarasota edged out Naples just a little bit by having more affordable housing.

Florida has already become a destination for executives buying large estates and mansions and major retailers are among those that have moved into the Naples area from outlying cities and states. The Tampa Bay area is ideal for businesses and commercial real estate with a lot of folks coming from California, Washington state, and New York.

What's the biggest draw? No state tax. While Florida may not be as cheap as it used to be, it still has no state income tax. People are looking for a high quality of life. Naples has scored high marks for desirability and happiness in current residence and all of the Florida cities benefit from the low tax rates. This is playing a significant role in population growth. Naples and Marco Island tend to be within the same district according to Collier County Commissioner Rick LoCastro. As the markets fluctuate, people get are getting more educated on their finances and their retirement realizing their retirement funds go a lot farther when they are not taxed as much.

According to Marco Eagle, our local newspaper, we had one of the busiest summers ever in 2021 with nearly 1.8 million visitors compared to the 1990 visitors of just 876,000. People are looking to get away from the tighter spaces of the bigger cities, more green and open spaces and of course, our beaches. In a recent survey of Americans age 45 and older, many had continued interest in Florida retirement destinations. 23% of Americans who are at or near retirement say the pandemic is changing their preference for where they would like to retire. Many soon-to-be retirees are still dreaming about Florida.
